Learning in Shared spaces - A Journey

This post is a list of my perspective and questions on my journey in shared spaces.

My first experience of learning in shared spaces was back in my MBA days - Where we learn , experiment , fail and reflect as a team. It has been a long time and I got 2 opportunities to do the same in a shared space.

Learning in Shared spaces - A Journey

The first was a moderated learning space on Systems thinking - specifically System archetypes.

The second is my journey in ThoughtWorks as a leader. It is the most important opportunity that I was looking for.

Some of the things that I enjoy in this space:
  • An accelerated learning on more complex topics
  • Having a forum to reflect and receive perspectives
  • Being called out on the assumptions and stereotypes that I had

Some questions that still remain:
  • How scalable is this model?
  • What group size is the best? I have typically been in group sizes that are 10-20. Not sure if a bigger size is scalable
  • How do we make sure that the group is in equilibrium with respect to every individual - Every person gets and receives enough to be invested in that group?
  • is it possible for me to unlearn and relearn when I participate in shared learning sessions?

I would also love to understand and learn how we can amplify learnings more than what I have today in some of these sessions.
  • What would I need to do personally to be able to amplify my learnings better?
  • How can I learn to facilitate and get a more active group equilibrium? Can I make every person contribute more and learn more as a result?

Some of these questions seem to be similar to how you would manage an online open-source community.

Counterfiet goods and the fledgeling e-commerce market places

India has a nascent and a very active market place. With good interest, the right climate for growth and right product mix, the indian retail marketplace seems to be going places. However, there are some alarming signals that seem to be ignored for growth that have a good chance of being dangerous to all the stakeholders involved. The issue I am talking about is the sale of counterfeit goods in all the indian market places. India has not had a history of strong Intellectual property rights. This time it is getting messier. The Indian marketplace model is very interesting and suits well to a country as diverse as India. The market place model floated by all the major e-railers suits the fact that the seller and the buyer can be connected for serving the needs for every day goods that are not necessarily covered by IP laws. India needs more effective IP laws since it is struggling with some products like traditional indian products that cannot be covered by IP versus modern produc...

Organizational growth and turn over

Organisations need to grow. However, they should not grow for the sake of growth. That would be a virus. Orgs should not grow to survive as well. Orgs should grow with a purpose.

How to handle a cranky team member

Scenario: You have been working on a team where a team member has been throwing tantrums on every decision made. He has been involved in some of them but claims to not be engaged. He keeps complaining of not being kept in loop, does not react positively to feedback and generally shirks responsibility. These are symptoms that something else is wrong. How do you go about managing this scenario?
